Trends and Future of Pharmaceutical Continuous Manufacturing

27th April 2023 | 8:30am EDT / 6:30am PDT / 1:30pm BST / 2:30pm CEST | Lawrence De Belder, Continuous Manufacturing Practice Lead at Pharmatech Associates, Inc. and Jan Vogeleer, Managing Director at Fette Compacting |WATCH FOR FREE

In this webinar, Lawrence De Belder will give an overview of the history, present, and expected future of continuous manufacturing for drug products, drug substances, and biologics. This talk will cover the evolution of equipment design, where simplification and modular design are increasingly important. To reap the benefits of continuous manufacturing, business strategies have evolved differently in various areas of the world, while support from worldwide health authorities has shifted over time. Initial thoughts about benefits have adjusted now that more data from industry is available and assumptions can be based on reality instead of estimations. Science has helped to build the rationale behind robust control strategies; valuable knowledge is being shared through clusters of consortia, to be combined in a central repository in the future. Will this evolution help to reduce the barriers to widespread adoption? What might trigger an exponential growth in the number of approved continuous processes? This webinar will describe the aspects that are critical in an integrated continuous manufacturing approach and discuss the logical consequences of market demand and quality control that will ensure the future.

Lawrence De Belder, Continuous Manufacturing Practice Lead at Pharmatech Associates, Inc on Trends and Future of Pharmaceutical Continuous Manufacturing

Lawrence De Belder has over 15 years of project management, equipment design, and validation experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Previously with Johnson & Johnson, he designed and installed multiple filling and packaging lines, including a detailed design and the start of a large continuous manufacturing project in Puerto Rico. De Belder was also responsible for oversight of all continuous manufacturing projects and activities of the Janssen supply chain and initiated multiple collaborations with academics and other pharma companies. He started the ISPE working group on continuous manufacturing (CM) and chaired the CM and PAT working groups at the IQ consortium for several years with a focus on costs, benefits and requirements related to this novel technology. De Belder leads the continuous manufacturing consulting group at Pharmatech Associates. He speaks five languages fluently and holds an MSc degree from Group-T Belgium with an emphasis on energy and automation.

CM re-invented: A novel solution for Continuous Direct Compression (CDC)

Despite the many advantages of CM, its adoption by the pharmaceutical industry for the production of OSD drug products has gone extremely slow. In his webinar, Jan Vogeleer will address the hurdles that have caused the industry to be reluctant to implement CM on a broad scale. He will explain how a novel approach to equipment design has allowed Fette Compacting to develop a revolutionary new machine for CDC, removing these hurdles and making CM now economically and technically accessible to the wide pharmaceutical industry. Key focus points for the new FE-CPS (Continuous processing System) are compactness, modularity and simplicity. Jan will also explain why and how Fette Compacting developed “embedded” PAT (Process Analytical Technology) for in-line product quality monitoring, an essential element to take full advantage of continuous manufacturing.

Jan Vogeleer, Managing Director at Fette Compacting on CM re-invented: A novel solution for Continuous Direct Compression (CDC)
Jan Vogeleer holds a master’s degree in mechatronics engineering from KU Leuven and an MBA degree from Université Aix-Marseille. He started his career in 1994 in the mechanical design department of one of the leading tablet press suppliers and soon moved into sales and general management positions. Jan combines a strong focus on understanding changing market trends and customer needs with highly innovative new product development. He pioneered the design of various novel machine concepts in the area of process performance, product change over and containment.

In 2010 Jan was involved in the development, design and implementation of the first CM lines for the production of tablets from raw materials to coated tablets. He joined Fette Compacting in 2017 to lead the newly created department for the development of know-how, technologies and equipment for CM. As such he built up a multi-disciplinary CM expert team in Fette and led the development of the new FE-CPS..
